  • Niya McDonald--9th Grade

This month's Student Spotlight shines on freshman Niya McDonald. The transition from middle to high school can be a daunting challenge for many ninth graders. Not for Niya! In addition to earning a stellar academic record in the first semester, Niya manages to keep busy with several extracurricular endeavors. She's an extraordinarily talented musician skilled in the French horn, mellophone, trumpet, alto saxophone, keyboard, and guitar. Niya's a member of the Plantation High School wind ensemble and marching band.  WOW!

Niya also finds time to volunteer at several animal shelters including the Humane Society of Broward County, HappiFarm, and FRIENDS Horse Farm. Congratulations to Niya for earning this month's Student Spotlight feature!

  • Kelsey Walker, Class of 2020

This month's Student Spotlight shines on BVS junior, Kelsey A. Walker. In addition to being a phenomenal student with a 4.75 weighted GPA, Kelsey recently completed her reign as Miss Broward County Teen USA 2018. Kelsey encourages teens statewide through her platform, “Living Your Best Life.” Her platform focuses on the importance of regular, meaningful exercise and encourages teens to make healthy food choices to avoid chronic illnesses. For the new year, Kelsey's platform has been expanded to also include empowerment and mental wellness as a means to ensure a holistic approach to being your best self.

Kelsey's teachers thoroughly enjoy working with her. At BVS, Kelsey is a member of the National Honor Society. She also holds memberships in Mu Alpha Theta, English Honor Society, and the Marine Science Society. Further, Kelsey is the president of the Ivy Rosettes, a college preparatory and community service-based mentorship program through Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority Inc., Gamma Zeta Omega Chapter.

In addition to her outstanding academic achievements and extracurricular activities, Kelsey always maintains a positive demeanor and a smile on her face. Impressive!
